memorials. Na de onafhankelijkheid van de Verenigde Staten op 4 juli in 1776, werd onder leiding van de 1e president van Amerika, George Washington, gezocht naar een geschikte hoofdstad. Dat werd Washington DC, vernoemd naar z&#8217;n stichter. &#8220;D.C.&#8221; staat overigens voor &#8220;District of Columbia&#8221;, het federale gebied van de Amerikaanse overheid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">De stad is inmiddels voorbij z&#8217;n federale grensgebied gegroeid, waardoor ook wijken in de aangrenzende staten, Virginia en Maryland als Washington DC worden aangemerkt.\u00a0De stad staat, vanzelfsprekend, bekend om zijn politiek, de Amerikaanse president, het Witte Huis, de Federale overheid en het hoofdkwartier van het Amerikaanse leger in het Pentagon.
