Bush reageerde erop met een internationale coalitie met onder andere Egypte en Syri\u00eb. Samen zorgden ze ervoor dat de Iraanse troepen uit Koeweit vertrokken. In Amerika had Bush te maken met forse bezuinigingen. Reagan slaagde er tijdens zijn presidentschap in de Amerikaanse economie weer uit het slop te trekken, het economische beleid werd ook Reaganomics genoemd.
