De snelweg is het einde van US Route 1 die in het noordoosten van Amerika begint. Op de route, die je vaak start vanuit Miami, tussen Ley Largo en Key West liggen verschillende eilanden van de Florida Keys. Rijd via eindeloze bruggen langs alle hoogtepunten uit de Florida Keys en geniet ondertussen van het uitzicht over de turquoise zee zowel links als rechts van je. Hoewel je de route in ongeveer 4 tot 5 uur kun afleggen, raden wij aan om onderweg te stoppen en de tijd te nemen. De markeringen op de Overseas Highway tellen af, Mijl 127 begint in Florida City en Mijl 0 is op Key West. Rijden op de Overseas Highway is in principe niet gevaarlijk, maar houdt rekening met veranderende lichtomstandigheden, wilde dieren en de zon die steeds wijzigt. Het eiland biedt vele activiteiten op het water om te ondernemen en de mogelijkheid om een bezoek te brengen aan het John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Het State Park is een onderwater natuurreservaat met een koraalrif. Je vindt er honderden soorten tropische vissen die je al snorkelend kunt bekijken of vanaf een boot met een &#8216;glass bottom&#8217;.\u00a0 Andere mogelijkheden om het park te verkennen zijn per kajak of kano. Er zijn hele korte wandelpaden om de plekken te bereiken waar je kunt zwemmen, picknicken of relaxen in een hangmat. Het eiland staat bekend om de sportvisserij. Er zijn vele sportvisserijbedrijven en inmiddels vele visrecords gemeten. Voor de kust vind je twee eilandjes die je kunt bezoeken; Indian Key Historic State Park en Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park. In het History of Diving Museum kom je alles te weten over de geschiedenis van duiken. In het museum vind je verschillende tentoonstellingen die ondersteund worden door allerlei artefacten. Een ander museum om te bezoeken is het Keys History and Discover Center. De plek om meer te weten te komen over de geschiedenis van de Florida Keys.
