Ge\u00efnspireerd door de westerse levensstijl en de bloeiende veehouderij in het gebied, kocht Roosevelt voor $14.000 (vandaag zo\u2019n $390.000) grond in het gebied, in de hoop een succesvolle veehouder te worden. Hij bouwde zijn Roosevelt Elkhorn Ranch 56 kilometer ten noorden van de snelgroeiende stad Medora in North Dakota. Het is het minst bezochte deel, maar misschien wel het mooist. Zeker met de bergen op de achtergrond en het meer ruige karakter. De 80 kilometer lange rit vanaf Interstate 94 is absoluut de moeite waard! Er zijn twee Visitor Centers en er is een ruim 75 kilometer lange Scenic Drive. Het stadje Medora is de entree naar het Nationaal Park. Het water voedt graslanden en trekt bizons, elanden en vogels aan. Theodore Roosevelt koos dit gebied als woonplek vanwege de nabijheid van de Little Missouri River.<\/p>\n<p>Mooie plekken om de rivier te bekijken zijn onder andere de Wind Canyon Overlook in de South Unit. Wandelingen van vijftien minuten tot maar liefst twaalf uur. Het Nationale Park is dan ook ontzettend geliefd bij fervente hikers. Op de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/thro\/planyourvisit\/hiking-and-trail-information.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website van de National Park Service<\/a>, kun je alle negentien routes vinden, verdeeld per categorie van eenvoudig tot zwaar.<\/p>\n<p>Vooral de <em>The Painted Canyon Trail\u00a0<\/em>is een populaire en geliefde trail in het park. Ze stammen af van ranchpaarden die begin twintigste eeuw achterbleven in de Badlands. Kijk dan ook niet vreemd op wanneer een kudde wilde paarden door je uitzicht voorbij komt gegaloppeerd. De kuddes zijn vooral zichtbaar in de South Unit en hebben een beschermde status.
