In het Visitor Center vertellen rangers enthousiast over het ontstaan van dit bijzondere gebied en helpen ze je op weg voor een bezoek in dit alienachtige landschap. Hike over verharde paden door het lavalandschap of volg de 11 kilometer lange Loop Road. Onderweg kun je stoppen bij uitzichtpunten en korte trails die je dichter bij het hart van dit ruige, buitenaardse terrein brengen. Blijf wel op de paden, de bodem is ongelijk en verraderlijk. NASA gebruikte Craters of the Moon in de jaren zestig als oefenterrein voor astronauten van het Apollo-programma. Onderweg stop je bij uitzichtpunten en korte wandelpaden die je langs lavavelden, kraters en mysterieuze lavabuizen brengen. Uitbarstingen van duizenden jaren geleden hebben hier een ruig, zwart landschap gevormd. Alle andere lavatunnelgrotten in het park zijn gesloten om de kwetsbare vleermuispopulaties te beschermen. <strong>Indian Tunnel<\/strong> is zo&#8217;n 240 meter lang en via een trap te bereiken. <strong>Dewdrop Cave<\/strong> is voor de avonturier en vergt een kleine klim naar beneden via rotsen, er is g\u00e9\u00e9n trap. Op 20 december 1951 gebeurde hier iets dat de wereld veranderde: ingenieurs van het Idaho National Laboratory brachten de eerste kernreactor tot leven en lieten vier kleine gloeilampen branden. De eerste lampen ooit gevoed door atoomenergie. Dat zachte licht markeerde het begin van het atoomtijdperk.<br \/>\nVandaag kun je dit historische gebouw nog steeds bezoeken. De beroemde Atomic Burger, een knipoog naar Arco\u2019s nucleaire geschiedenis, is d\u00e9 favoriet op de kaart. Sterker nog: eigenlijk m\u00f3et je deze bestellen.
